OUR SCHOOL PROGRAM
Stellar Academy offers comprehensive Grade 3-8 education tailored to the needs of each student.
TAILORED TO LEARNING NEEDS
We provide an immersive, multi-sensory approach to teaching language and math. Our faculty use the rigorous and successful Slingerland® method for language instruction, which is a classroom adaptation of the Orton-Gillingham Approach for Language Arts Instruction.Similarly, we use use a multisensory, explicit, systematic approach to mathematics instruction. These structured learning approaches are well-suited to the learning needs of children with Dyslexia. For more information see the International Dyslexic Association’s website.
CUSTOMIZED TO STUDENT’S COMPETENCY
Students are placed in classes based on their competency level rather than their grade level, and given the time they need to master coursework so they have a deep understanding and strong foundation for later learning. Students that progress more rapidly may be moved to higher course levels as deemed appropriate to the student's needs. Class sizes are small (no more than 12:1 student:teacher ratio) allowing teachers to better address individual students’ needs.
RESPONSIVE TO EMOTIONAL NEEDS
Students with dyslexia often struggle in traditional learning environments. As a result, students often develop low self-esteem and anxiety that hinders their learning. We provide a supportive classroom and school environment where struggling with learning is embraced as part of the learning process. We encourage students to try rather than punish them for failure, and foster self-advocacy, allowing students to thrive throughout their lives.
A COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION
Each day our students are taught the core language and maths subjects in the morning when they are most receptive to learning. Other subjects such as social studies, science, PE and enrichment subjects are given in the afternoons. Four to six field trips are held during the year.
